Windy Hon – Teaching Cantonese on James Hyden’s music show

How it began… I remember it was a weekend in August and I was
reading the Little Stoke Gifford Matters magazine. A little
advertisement caught my eye: Bradley Stoke Radio looking for
volunteers! I thought it was an interesting opportunity, so I
contacted them, and they invited me to attend their training courses
for new members.

I actually didn’t aim to be a presenter as I’m not good at talking. I
am a non-native English speaker, and worry that I might offend other
people without knowing. Having said that, I enjoyed the training
sessions and learned a whole new aspect of radio broadcasting: how to
prepare for a show, how to use the standard broadcasting equipment,
what not to say, etc… but having fun at the same time. I found that
the teaching was professional.

By going to the training, I met new people. They are a friendly bunch
and encourage each other to try presenting a show. One day, I was
chatting to James Hyden, another volunteer who is presenting a show on
Sunday evenings. He shared his brilliant idea: he asked me to teach
him Cantonese on part of his show and in return, he would teach me
some Bristolian sayings. So, there you are, I started to speak on the
radio live from November in the language that I’m still trying to
master.

I definitely don’t regret joining this organisation and hope that I
could do more to help them grow. I never expected that I would be
broadcasting live to the local community, and yet here I am!

Try something new today!
